From July 2010 to July 2011, Matthew Kroenig was a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow in the Department of Defense, where he worked on the development and implementation of U.S. defense policy and strategy in the Middle East.

Previously, in 2005, he served as a strategist in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he authored the first-ever, U.S. government-wide strategy for deterring terrorist networks.  For his work, he received the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Award for Outstanding Achievement. His contributions to the development of U.S. counterterrorism strategy are featured in the book Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America’s Secret Campaign against Al Qaeda.
